To begin generating interest and background knowledge on your rocks and minerals unit:
1. Have students collect rocks at recess and add them to a box next to a field guide. Have the students try to identify the rocks and the minerals that make the rock. This will also allow you to start creating your own school field guide of rocks and minerals from your city and state.
2. Watch this YouTube clip. A song about the rock cycle that will stick with your kids during testing. Check out: http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=JBJFVHlQ2ZY&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DJBJFVHlQ2ZY
3. Put out vocabulary activities to help the students learn the language before the unit.
