<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Today I am interviewing my good friend, Cailin Hannan. She is a model teacher for differentiation in the classroom. Today we talk about the importance of differentiation in the classroom and how she uses it in different subjects.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Differentiating is so important in education. I know this is a topic you are passionate about. What about differentiation is so crucial to your planning?

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">In my classroom, as is typical in most, I serve a lot of very diverse learners. My students come to me at many different levels, sometimes spanning multiple grades. They also come to me with a variety of skills and interests. When it comes to meeting every individual student's needs, while also motivating them individually, this is a huge challenge. Because of this, when completing my unit and weekly plans, differentiation has to be a focus in all subject areas. First of all I need to plan assessments that will help me make imperative decisions about differentiation quickly (diagnostics, tickets-out-the-door, etc.). I first need to think about differentiating based on the student's level of mastery. I think about the supports some students will need (additional teacher support, regular check-ins, paraphrasing of directions, reading partner, word bank) and extensions for others (what will I do for those who already have mastery and/or finish quickly). I want all students to have the support to show me what they know. Another element of my plans is differentiating in regard to how the students will show me what they know. All students do not need to complete the same task (choice boards are a great way to make this happen). This is where I take into account the different learning styles and interests.

How do you differentiate in your reading groups?

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">I use a diagnostic such as a running record as a starting point for the year and group students at a similar instructional reading level. I do not like to always keep these groups throughout the year, though. Obviously they will be flexible as students make progress, but I also like to mix things up and group students in other ways. For independent reading I like to group students by their interest in a particular genre or author. All the students have a choice of what they will read independently (which will be on their level) but they get to discuss their common interests with a diverse group during "book clubs." For students who are struggling with reading I like to group them by the area for which they are struggling. I have a strategy group that focuses on fluency, and one that focuses on decoding with accuracy. Students can also be grouped based on the comprehension strategy for which they need the most support. I encourage independent reading with my readers who struggle in a variety of ways: reading the first chapter of the book with them and discussing all story elements prior to releasing them, allowing them to buddy read and have regular check ins, or allowing them to reread (from a read aloud) a book they enjoyed.

3. Subjects like science and social studies are harder to differentiate. How do you ensure that the needs of your class are met?

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">When possible I try to find reading passages and books at a variety of reading levels. This is not always readily available, so I always plan to meet with particular students who need support prior to them reading for information. I get them started and then check back in a bit more often than with other students. I also provide outlines and word banks to help students key in on the most important points while they are reading or during a mini-lesson. Student projects are completed either using choice boards (for both interest and ability) and collaborative work. Most of the time groups and partnerships are strategically chosen to help allow students to utilize leadership skills while others can get the support they need. Lastly, I have a research question that goes with each unit. As students demonstrate mastery and complete tasks they can work independently (or with others as possible) on "answering" the question. Their challenge is to try to use a variety of sources and come up with different ways of showing me (and the class) what they know. Lastly, I really like to do a Jigsaw activity. This gives every group member a specific role for which they will be an expert. After working with a group on their specific role the experts move to a new group where they must share their ideas. This allows for every individual student to participate, but not before getting support from their peers.

4. Where/how do you get your ideas for differentiation?

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">My main source of knowledge has been my colleagues throughout the years. Everybody I have worked with has had great ideas that I become lucky enough to add to my tool box.

5. How do you manage the classroom with students completing different tasks? How do you ensure they are engaged?

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">I am constantly working with students and questioning their progress. I walk the room and keep lots of checklists. A quick check on a sheet lets me know that a student is progressing, while an anecdotal note on another student lets me know I need to pull them to provide support the following day. I have more regular check-ins during project and/or independent work with students who have more difficulty with time management. I also like to have conferences with students or a discussion with my whole class as a reflection after completing tasks/projects. This will hopefully help me in the future.

6. What is your favorite part of teaching?

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">I love the planning, especially planning pacing for the year or for particular units. I love to make sure that all the standards fit together in a way that will be engaging and cross-curricular for the students. Deciding on the perfect activity is also a great part of this job. Above all I love the students. I love watching them learn and getting to play a small part in their world for a year. The connections that I make with them are my favorite part.

Poetry Month is quickly approaching. In the midst of cramming for testing you think, 'I hate poetry! Why am I stressing over teaching it?'

Let me solve that problem for you! I have 3 units designed to specific grade level Common Core standards. In addition, I have created monthly poetry literacy centers to keep your students enjoying poetry all year. Each unit has over 170 pages of detailed lesson plans, assessments, student pages, exemplars, and wall display materials. The lessons provide an essential question, objective, common core standard, procedures, and assessments. (Keep reading for FREEBIES and to ENTER the GIVEAWAY for a free unit and April Literacy Center!)

I know many of us fear poetry and symbolism, but poetry is so much FUN and it is the perfect outlet for creativity after spending the morning taking a standardized test. Your students will be engaged, you will have lesson plans taken care of, and ALL of you will be able to have fun, relax, and enjoy finding a new found love of poetry!

Each unit contains:

Hello! Hello! I am so excited to start my new blog series Teachers Who Rock! My first interview is with the amazing Kelli Alaina Wise. She graciously took time from her schedule to answer questions that I am sure many of us want to learn.

From amazing lessons to business success, Kelli has definitely rocked it! Her kind spirit and cheerleading for others has helped many stay focused and motivated. Her constant challenge to try something new pushed me to focus on my blog and do a 30-day challenge. As a result, I found that I love blogging and sharing my new finds.

So without further ado, sit back, enjoy your cup/glass of (Fill in the Blank), and get inspired.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">What was your inspiration behind
your two recent projects - Instagram Insiders and The Goal Diggers Workshop?

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">The inspiration for allll of my projects
as a small biz girl stem from two things. First, I consider what my audience
needs and wants the most. I ask myself
questions like: What is it that they’re
talking about? What frustrations are
they expressing? The second thing I think
about is what I’m a) capable of providing and b) passionate about creating or offering.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">So here’s how these two factors played
into the inspiration behind my Instagram Insiders and Goal Diggers projects.
The #TeacherpreneurTribe Facebook group is my online family. Evvvverything I do
is to help them in some way – through whatever motivation, encouragement, or
useful information I can provide to support our community.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Over this past summer, the primary
focus of the group was on sharing the best social media strategies to help each
other extend our reach online. By surveying the tribe, I learned that the
overwhelming interest in the group was to begin focusing on Pinterest. As a
result, I prepared a daily challenge (minus weekends) encouraging discussions
around Pinteresting topics. Then, as Operation Pinterest Powerhouse was
wrapping up, I polled our group again to find out which platform everyone would
be most interested in exploring next.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Again, a huge majority of our tribe
members voted for Instagram. This
interest motivated me to take Instagram e-courses on my own and do as much
research as possible (while also implementing the strategies I learned for my
own account) so that I could provide valuable content for our tribe. I knew lots of people were really hungry for
this knowledge, so I wanted to be able to give them the best strategies that
would help them succeed with IG. Because
I’m a lifelong learner at heart and I also looooove both teaching and creating
pretty things, organizing the free 25-Day Challenge as well as my Instagram
Insiders Mini Course was great fun. I
also reached out to a few teacherpreneurs that I considered to be experts on
the platform and asked if I could interview them. This was also TONS of fun because I love
learning from other passionate, super helpful, and amazingly generous teacher
friends!

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Later on, I approached the Goal
Diggers project a little differently than the Instagram challenge and mini
course. This time I didn’t survey the tribe. I just paid close attention to what was going
on in the online teacherpreneur world. I noticed that people were really
excited about declaring their #olw (One Little Word) to set an intention for
their businesses going into the new year.
This made me realize that while it was a fun and useful activity,
teacherpreneurs could benefit from more guidance with setting strategic goals
and mapping out a clear plan to achieve them.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">So this is how the Goal Diggers
workshop was born. I wanted to provide a
free learning opportunity for our tribe members to think more deeply and
strategically about their goals and plans for the year while also coming
together to support and encourage each other through the process. I love hosting online events and, of course,
creating pretty things… so the workshop and DIY Funbook were a no-brainer for
me! I also added an option to work with
me privately for coaching because I know the goal-setting and planning process tend
to be easier when you have someone you can trust to walk you through it. (And
helping others 1-on-1 to find clarity from within their confusion is one of my
favorite things to do!)

work-from-home mom is one of the most challenging AND rewarding opportunities
on the face of the earth. I can’t even
come close to pretending that I’ve got it all figured out! But I also feel incredibly blessed to have the
opportunity to navigate the everyday chaos with my Wise Guys by my side.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">It’s similar in a lot of ways to
working in the classroom. No two days
are ever the same. And even when I begin
the day with a great plan in place, nothing ever goes entirely as planned. In fact, I’ve learned to start each day
expecting the unexpected. Snow days, sicknesses, and never-ending piles of
laundry seem to be par for the course.

is to imagine how long I think a business task will take me and then add a
considerable amount of “margin” to that expectation. For example, if I think I’ll need an hour to
write a long email, I’ll set aside an hour and a half or even two hours for the
task because I’m sure there will be some sort of distraction that will
interrupt me. My work time is super
limited because I’m also caring for my infant son during the day, taking care
of household chores, and spending time with my older kiddos when they get home from
school. That’s why I have to be realllly
efficient with the pockets of work time that I DO get. I like to plan out my day the night before so
that I can hit the ground running as soon as I wake up. But my plan has to be very loose because, as I
said, no two days are alike! I have to
make my plans with the expectation that they won’t play out the way I imagine
them in my own little dream world.

online so I can shorten the learning curve for my fellow teacherpreneurs. I believe teachers have sooooo much

love doing anything I possibly can to help make it easier for them to make an
impact beyond their own classroom walls.

in your business when you’re first starting out because you’re hoping to make

think strategically about exactly what you need to move your business forward,
making a smart investment can pay off in huge dividends. A wise investment reflects the fact that you truly

your business.

stay motivated is to find their tribe and stay connected. When you try to operate your business on your
own, it can be a very lonely and isolating experience. Having friends who “get it,” know what you’re
going through, and know how hard you work is priceless! And I believe two minds are always better
than one. The best decisions I’ve made
for my business have ALWAYS come from discussions I’ve had with my “cheerleaders”
who know how to ask me the right questions and help me see the things that I wouldn’t
have seen on my own.<span style="font-family: "garamond";">
I am sure many of you are coming off a 4-day week (which probably has you more tired that a 5 day week). If you are super lucky then you have enjoyed a full week off. My house has been full of sickness this week. I think my kiddos have made up for 2 years of nothing major in 5 days. I am ready for warm days now!

Book of the Week
Today I am going back to one of my favorite books. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo is one I have read aloud every single year. I've read it to 2nd graders and 5th graders, boys, and girls...they all loved it. I have recommended it to other teachers who quickly came back for more suggestions because their class loved the book. If you want to teach theme, if you want to have your students on the edge of their seats, if you love beautiful pictures, and if you want a book YOU will enjoy reading again and again, then this is the book for you. (NOTE: Have your school librarian hold all copies of the book in the library for your class. I guarantee you students will ask to go to the library to check it out the day you start it.) Here is a website on more stuff to use with the book.

Lesson of the Week
Today's lesson focuses on getting the Writer's Workshop time organized. One of the things my students had the hardest time with was knowing when and how to conference. After taking time to teach students about conferencing with the teacher and conferencing with peers we had more time on task and more engaging conferences. This post contains a free download of conferencing forms.
Fabulous Freebie
This week's freebie is 5 Science Prompts. Recipe of the Week
This Stuffed Chicken Recipe from eatingwell.com is my husband's favorite. We skip the breading part and it is still super yummy. This quick recipe has minimal prep time. I like to add some broccoli or corn as a side.
I can't believe it is already February. I hope that Groundhog predicts and early spring today! I also want to wish my parents Happy Anniversary today. And my sister and brother-in-law a Happy Anniversary on Sunday. This is definitely the month of love for my family.

Listening/Watching: I finished watching Parenthood in December. I loved it so much that nothing I watched held my attention longer than 5 minutes. This past week I discovered Broadchurch on Netflix. It is a murder mystery. (**And after the latest episode I think I'm done with this one. I think I'll go back and rewatch Parenthood.)

Loving: The other day on the way to take my kids to preschool we listened to Alt Nation. (Love that my kiddos get my music) and we heard Nothing But Thieves cover of Where is My Mind. I fell in love from the first note. The kids did too and my 3-year-old asked later if we could listen to the "Mind" song again. It was an exclusive song and we can't find it anywhere. I HAVE to find it somewhere!

Thinking: That Groundhog better have good results to or else! I'm so tired of cold, wet, gray days! My family loves the outdoors, but all of the "winter bugs" have taken over with lots of sickness. I have never been more ready for summer. We all desperately need days where we only see the inside of the house to sleep.

Wanting: A Horse! I've asked for a horse since I was little. I recently started riding again and my daughter has started riding too. My little, no-fear, child has already started posting. Although we only ride once a week and don't own a horse (we do by heart just not financially), it is so much fun for all 3 of us.

Needing: To take some stuff off my plate. I am sure I don't need to explain more as we all need to start doing this one!

Swooning: The Crossover by Kwame Alexander. I love, love, love this book. The words, the rhythm, the characters, all of it! It is a combination of family, friends, basketball, and poetry. I promise your kids will love it. The words literally dance on the page.

This is the time of year that I like to really focus on Perimeter and Area. Even if I have taught the standards previously, this is a great review. Why do I like doing perimeter and area at this time of year? Well I get to teach and review a lot of standards!

- Adding of greater numbers
- Adding with multiple addends
- Shape review
- Critical thinking
- And of course the obvious perimeter and area

Here are a few lessons, freebies, books and blog posts to help you teach perimeter and area. Just click on the image to access a PDF file. Download the file and you can click each link you want.
I have said for years I wanted to try to make my own bread. There is something weird about the way I buy a loaf at the store and a month later it is still hanging around with no mold on it. My daughter loves PBJ sandwiches and I cringe every time I give her a sandwich wondering what preservatives are in the bread. Now I don't have to worry because I know all of the ingredients going into the bread. I found this recipe on allrecipes.com and after two tries (I read the helpful reviews and adding the vital wheat gluten, baked it on white bread setting, and used butter instead of shortening) and WOW! My two-year-old eats the bread by itself. It is that yummy. Check out this bread recipe!

The past 7 months I have learned so much about writing, creating, and marketing. I feel like I got a business degree without the guidance of a syllabus. After months of feeling like my list was growing longer and my mind was racing out of control, I was led to these 3 books. If you are looking for finding creativity, learning how to connect with others in business, and wanting to find a way out of that giant to-do-list, then you have to read these 3 books.

1. Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert
This book spoke to me from the first sentence. I felt like Elizabeth Gilbert was sitting beside me on the couch coaching me through my need for perfection and my fear of not having perfect words. I love that she says that creativity doesn't have to be something you are great at and it doesn't have to reach the masses. I love creating and I feel that I have to be perfect for people to want it. I love the freedom of just being able to create for myself. No perfection, no marketing, just plain old creating for the fun of it!

2. How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
I am horrible at walking into new situations, horrible at small talk with the cashier at a store, and horrible about starting conversations with strangers. I don't know where this fear came from, how id developed, or why it still haunts me at 39. But, this book helped me realize how much I am on the right track. What gets stuck in my head is the right thing to say. I care deeply about other people, but I am always afraid that I will offhandedly offend someone. I now know why this book has been popular for almost a century. I just comes down to making others feel important. A simple smile, a kind word, a nice note.

3. Make it Happen by Lara Casey
So I am sticking with this theme of getting over being perfect. And this book pushed that issue as well. I love the freedom of perfect. That freedom has allowed me to write 23 posts in 23 days and freed me from the fear of pushing publish. Honestly, what horrible thing could happen? I write a bad sentence, I miss a word, yep that isn't what a publisher or editor wants, but right now my goal is to write and put my words out in the universe. Lara Casey has dealt with the demons of being perfect many times. Her advice is amazing and her tips on tackling a to-do list are life and time-saving!Jessica Zanninihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00760065836267992192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-200795653759398850.post-63489343453614369422016-01-22T06:00:00.000-05:002016-02-15T12:48:15.703-05:00Weekly Notes for January 22 (Books, Freebies, Lesson Plans and More)

Are you feeling a little bogged down. So many ideas but you don't know where to start or afraid to take the leap? Well, let these 5 podcasts inspire you!

1. Magic Lessons with Elizabeth Gilbert
I love, love, love this one. The first two episodes were so current in my life. I felt like they were broadcast just for my ears. This podcasts goes with Elizabeth Gilbert's new book Big Magic. I will talk more about this in my next post. If you want inspiration to create something new, then these podcasts are just what you need to get over the fear and just create.

2. Amy Porterfield
Amy Porterfield is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to social media. She is an expert at list building and Facebook. And what she isn't an expert at, she has lots of friends and guests who are experts. Each episode is full of ideas for increasing your business potential and there is a freebie to download and use right away. Her soothing voice is calming, yet inspiring.

3. Smart, Passive Income with Pat Flynn
This is my newest podcast and I like how Pat Flynn seems so down to earth. He has a wide range of guests on his show and each one feels like a conversation with friends. He doesn't hide any facts from his successes and failures and the honesty makes me feel a more personal connection.

4. The Tim Ferriss Show
From Kevin Costner to tips on better sleep, Tim Ferriss has you covered on ways to be more productive in less time. His book the 4-Hour Work Week is a huge success. After following him on Instagram, I realized he has figured out the work/life balance. A model for success and a voice of reason.

5. Angela Watson's Truth for Teachers
She has taken Teachers Pay Teachers and turned it into so many things. Her podcasts are current topics that any teacher could relate to and her ideas are easy to implement. A great model and teacher to use to inspire yourself and others.

This week was full of excitement - from the National Championship game (hate my tigers lost) to the announcement of the ALA book awards. An interesting twist this year was that a picture book Last Stop on Market Street won the Newbery Award! Yes, I know I should be featuring the winner this week, but I decided to share the book I had picked to win, Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan. (This book did win a Newbery Honor).

I usually do with Pam Munoz Ryan books but this one more so than the others. The intertwining stories take you through such different points of view of the rise of Hitler and the Great Depression. My two-year-old loves it. It takes 10 mins to prep in the slow cooker and 4 hours later dinner is ready! Some corn bread with a little cheese added is a great side. A little sour cream and cheese on top is the perfect addition, but isn't needed especially is you are going eating clean.

A writer of children's stories and writer to inspire and make the lives of teachers easier.

I would feel the crunch as faculty meetings were filled with testing information and the date of the test drew closer. I finally realized that January was a great place for me to start getting my students ready for testing.

My students had ample time to reflect and ask questions so as the days drew closer my test anxiety kids were happier and my students who waited until the day of the test to ask questions that I couldn’t answer asked questions earlier.
